The Bangladesh Bar Council functions as an independent statutory entity in BD, operating under the Legal Practitioners and the Bar Council Order. Tasked with licensing and regulating lawyers in the country, it holds the authority to institute tribunals for the investigation and adjudication of complaints lodged against legal practitioners. As of 2019, there were five such tribunals in operation. These tribunals possess the power to issue reprimands, suspend licenses temporarily, or permanently revoke licenses of lawyers found guilty of misconduct. Over the period from 2014 to 2018, the council addressed a total of 378 complaints, resulting in the permanent revocation of licenses for nine lawyers and temporary suspensions for six others. Bangladesh has a very low unemployment rate, and it is estimated that by 2035, BD will have one of the highest rates of employment in Asia.
